Aurora: A Novel by David Koepp

SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE FROM NETFLIX AND ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR KATHRYN BIGELOW “Fantastic story, a real page-turner. Impossible to put down." – Stephen King From the author of Cold Storage comes a riveting, eerily plausible thriller, told with the menace and flair of Under the Dome or Project Hail Mary , in which a worldwide cataclysm plays out in the lives of one complicated Midwestern family.  In Aurora, Illinois, Aubrey Wheeler is just trying to get by after her semi-criminal ex-husband split, leaving behind his unruly teenage son.  Then the lights go out—not just in Aurora but across the globe. A solar storm has knocked out power almost everywhere. Suddenly, all problems are local, very local, and Aubrey must assume the mantle of fierce protector of her suburban neighborhood.  Across the country lives Aubrey’s estranged brother, Thom. A fantastically wealthy, neurotically over-prepared Silicon Valley CEO, he plans to ride out the crisis in a gilded desert bunker he built for maximum comfort and security. But the complicated history between the siblings is far from over, and what feels like the end of the world is just the beginning of several long-overdue reckonings—which not everyone will survive . . .  Aurora is suspenseful storytelling—both large scale and small—at its finest.  Read more

Aurora Imagine a powerful flare that could knock out the power lines , phones, electricity, internet . Cell phones and any form of communication. On September 1, 1859 this really happened. It was reported by a British astronomer named Richard Hodgson. It was called the Storm of 1859, the Carrington event. This massive huge solar flare spewed electrified gas and subatomic particles toward the earth causing havoc on the telegraph lines. This event sets the stage for what happens in the present in Aurora, Illinois and other places in the world. When the media warns that this solar storm is coming some begin to stock up on the needed supplies while others have their doubts. Norman Levy a scientist has been monitoring and studying this possible event. Just when will it happen? When it does hit the invisible collapse of the power grid, and life as we know it vanished in a flash. Meet Aubrey who lives in Aurora and has to fend for herself including having had her ex-husband’s son living with her. Rude, disrespectful and extremely belligerent, Scott is not a step parent’s dream. Everyone has to prepare for what happens and when it does the scene the author describes will mystify readers and keep your eyes riveted to the night sky. The scene was dynamite and the people could not believe the night sky. Aurora had just enough food hopefully to sustain her and Scott while her ex shows up with a generator but an altercation with Scott changes it all. Almost like a big kid who needs to get his way instead of a father with compassion for his son. While this is happening Thom her brother has his own issues to deal with in the bunker. When you are paying money for services from strangers don’t expect they will be loyal to you . His wife is there for the comfort and when he sends Brady to check on Aurora and give her money to sustain her why does she refuse it? Pride or because it was from him? At times it gets in the way of both. Both worlds fall apart when Aubrey has to face the fate of Brady and Thom gets blindsided by those in his bunker that desert him. When Aurora’s ex claims she’s in trouble and he calls from Brady’s phone will Thom fall for the con and leave the Sanctuary and go to Aurora. Blindsided and finding three men. Aubrey’s house and realizing the danger, author David Koepp reminds us of family love, loyalty, teenage romance and coming of age and even more learning to deal with life when things get hard. An solar storm that brought a community together as one helping each other out yet forced that would take away someone and the hope of survival. Norman never saw the lights but left something special for so many. Brady’s death hit Thom really hard and the final lines to Scott powerful: talk to people. I promise you there is absolutely nothing more worth doing. The power of love, harsh realities and understanding as Thom does something that will endear you to him and forgiveness plays a vital role. So true. A story of triumph, defeats, power, revenge and the hope of survival as you enter a small town and fall in love with the scenery, the people and Aurora.
