For both the Civil War completist and the general reader! Anyone acquainted with the American Civil War will readily recognize the names of the Confederacy’s most prominent generals. Robert E. Lee. Stonewall Jackson. James Longstreet. These men have long been lionized as fearless commanders and genius tacticians. Yet few have heard of the hundreds of generals who led under and alongside them. Men whose battlefield resolve spurred the Confederacy through four years of the bloodiest combat Americans have ever faced. In The Encyclopedia of Confederate Generals , veteran Civil War historian, Samuel W. Mitcham, documents the lives of every Confederate general from birth to death, highlighting their unique contributions to the battlefield and bringing their personal triumphs and tragedies to life. This is an exceptional book. It is exactly what the title suggests - a directory of Confederate generals ordered by surname. It is absolutely comprehensive. All 426 generals are included and thoroughly discussed. This is a remarkable feat. The biographical essays are excellent, and range from five paragraphs to somewhat longer discussions for the most senior, skilled, and important figures we know from history. The essays introduce each general with a brief discussion of birthplace, a note or two about upbringing, education, and any antebellum accomplishments in politics, business, agriculture, etc... Then the essays move on to discussions of the wartime involvements, accomplishments and, perhaps, any failures or transgressions. This really makes the book because it offers a true, critical interpretation of each general's abilities. Interesting anecdotes are also included. Essays close with post-war activities, if any, reasons for death and burial locations. These essays are just excellent, and a joy to read. They are not dry lists of facts and dates, but are interesting and engaging reading. Military engagements and strategy are discussed generally, and the fine details of troop movements and battle tactics are not included. There are two very short appendixes listing the battles of both the Mexican and Civil Wars. Woke, cancel culture has sought to destroy the reputations of these enormously important, influential and revered figures. Here's a book that restores their legacy. It does not apologize for what they believed and what they did. The entire argument in that regard is beyond the scope of this book. The physical book itself, though chunky, is constructed of light, somewhat frail material. It will require careful handling to remain in good condition.
