I've long admired Rich Cohen's writing, the way he injects every topic—30s gangsters, the Chicago Bears, 19th century NY pirates, Pee Wee hockey—with elements of autobiography. This, to me, is his best book, the one he's been working up to for more than 20 years. Rich's father, the Brooklyn-born, aphorism-loving master negotiator and best-selling author, is a character like you've never encountered in a book or a film. And you realize to which Herb's way with words—somewhere between Old Testament and Bensonhurst patois—has influenced his son's voice. I feared I wouldn't be able to relate, but I found this portrait absolutely irresistible, as will anyone who's ever had a father.
